*shrug*

o.O

Um... The Mittani is a goon... you know that Something Awful derived group...  The comments he expressed and attitude he demonstrated are in the finest tradition of that group.  I find it hard to be surprised.

*shrug*

Tempest ... meet the tea cup.

The only surprising thing is that the rest of you find this at all surprising or abnormal (for goons).  It demonstrates a level of naivety about what that group's philosophy and attitudes towards all persons not of that group really is.  And about the way CCP actively encourages the type to join EVE online and play in their game.  Yeash people.  There's a reason EVE will never grow beyond a certain point and will always remain a niche game.  Actively encouraging people who's core attitudes were amply demonstrated by The Mittani in that fanfest panel to play the game is the primary reason EVE's population will remain smaller than it's potential.  The problem with the "we encourage that behavior in game only" point of view is that it invites people who have those attitudes in real life to join and play your game.  It can not be surprising that eventually these types of people show their true colors in public.

To quote the oft used meme: HTFU people.

Except that he could have gone to prison had something happened to this person after he sicced the gankers on him. He could have taken an ill person's life.

Just because an idiot has a gun doesn't mean much, when he fires that gun and could have hit someone it becomes more serious.

At minimum I don't think he should be a CCP official.

Which doesn't stop you from being careful when you spot an idiot with a gun now does it? And it shouldn't surprise you when an idiot eventually pulls the trigger either.

Look up the words "accident waiting to happen".

I don't think anyone is shocked. I think it's more a cynical exploitation by people who want to get rid of The Mittani and saw an opportunity.

I love Eve the game but I loathe the 'Eve community' sometimes.

My apologies to contradict you so directly, but balls.

I will gladly accept Mittens stepping down from the chair of the CSM.

Some lines don't get crossed when in public. Yes, he has several roles to play, and in this role he was acting as head goon, as opposed to head CSM.

However, he was out of the game, he was in public.

Do the crime, do the time.

I've never accepted the legal difference between if I drink and drive and hit a telephone pole, vs drink and drive and hit a bus full of nuns and kids. Same decision, different results. Why should I be penalized less because of the result, when its the decision to D&D is what needs to be corrected ?

Just because this player was (is) fine mentally doesn't mean that fucking taunting/bullying & calling his gang to taunt/bully this guy couldn't have lead to disaster.

This reason is the UI.

nope - the ui although an issue is not the reason we don't have a good retention rate of newbies - the greifers on the other hand? EVE will never grow beyond a certain point because of it.

Agreed - but I do think this just might be a matter of serious concern for CCP, and esp. its investors and business partners, ie. SOE. They want the number of subscribers to increase, not remain as is.

And, this sort of bad press, prior to the release of Dust 514, isn't what CCP or SOE wants or needs - it could cost both companies millions of dollars in revenue.

I would not be surprised to see some sort of "corrective action" taken - but, not because some players are whining; rather due to the potential effect on CCP's bottomline.

@larryb whenever this type of thing has gone on before - ccp have dug in the heels and refused to budge on any aspect of the game that could be considered griefing in any other game. Why would they change now. Also - it's not like EVE as it is is not profitable. It is - sure it could be more profitable but CCP have steadfastly refused to pander to a more non griefer (and larger) audience. They made the conscious decision not to attract this larger audience quite a while ago. They are not going to change at this point in time. Sony will just have to live with that.

Well, Letrange, looks like CCP's heels are not so dug in any more, per their official response... :P

Try not to be too surprised. CCP's investors expect to see some big ROI on Dust 514 and the partnership with Sony. They don't give a damn about Alex, CSM, or whining players - Goons or carebears.

I would also not be too surprised to learn that CCP's investors are hoping for a complete Sony buyout, at some point. The most recent trends in making the game simpler and more friendly for new players, as well as the introduction of the Japanese client, seem to me to be rather interesting markers in this direction.
